The Tomcat

I can’t agree more with Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy, President Kennedy’s mother, and a philanthropist herself, when she says, “It has been said, ‘time heals all wounds.’ I do not agree. The wounds remain. In time, the mind, protecting its sanity, covers them with scar tissue and the pain lessens. But it is never gone.”

So true! Many a times we feel that with the passage of time, we overcome everything that has troubled us over the course of our lives; but no, time may make us forget things for a while, or new event and new memories may bury them in the deep recesses of our mind, but they are never gone forever. How hard one may try, every now and then, sleeping or awake, the painful memories come and stand in front of us, reopening old wounds.

I remember, in childhood we all siblings had read a story in Hindi ‘है कोई बिल्ले का ग्राहक?’ A spooky and scary type of story that frightened the life out of us. There was this man who had a black Tomcat as a pet, but after sometime, he got fed up with it and wanted to get rid of it. After selling it to a person, the moment he opened the door of his house, the Tomcat was there, sitting in the hall with its yellow eyes shining like burning embers in darkness. The man tried to sell it for umpteen number of times to different people, in areas thousands of miles away, but every time he reached home, he found the Tomcat sitting there.

Isn’t it so with all our pain, our wounds, our failures, our personal losses, childhood nightmares, sad memories, fears and frustrations! We think we have got rid of them, but the moment we enter our ‘home’ (our private space in loneliness) there they are, sitting in front of us like the Tomcat, staring down at us.

Why to run away from them or to bury them! They are a part and parcel of our being, they define us as strong human beings who have stood the tests of time. Let us, instead, learn to live with them like our pets.

Who will buy this story?

है कोई बिल्ले का ग्राहक?
