A Step on the Staircase

Recently, India had been on the boil for days together. The writing on the wall, which had been there, staring us in the face for long, and which we had been shutting our eyes on, came on us so loud and clear. We, the people of this nation were put on our feet, to stand against something that is such a glaring reality i.e. CORRUPTION. But what a shame that it took the hard struggle, strong conviction and unyielding determination of a seventy four years old man to shake the complacent nation out of its slumber; and to put to shame those who have looted the nation to enrich their own coffers with the ill-gotten money. Funny Fifties

I should have written this piece last year, but I could not. The reality that dawned on me then was so shaking and shocking. Noor — the Little Angel

This poem is about Noor - a little girl from Pakistan whose heart surgery was performed by Indian doctors in 2003. As this was the first incident of its own kind, there was much hype about it. Thus this poem, which was published in ‘The Tribune’ on 24 July, 2003
